 Music Technology and Contemporary Music at Georgia Tech
new musical instruments, new collaborations, a residency with Ethel, and a film screening
We wanted to let you know about some upcoming music technology and contemporary music events at Georgia Tech:
- Tonight (Friday April 12th) at 7 pm, come to the 2013 Guthman Musical Instrument Competition at the Klaus Advanced Computing Building at 266 Ferst Drive on the Georgia Tech campus. The finals are free and open to the public with advance RSVP online at www.gtcmt.gatech.edu/guthmanrsvp. Nineteen inventors, composers and designers from 11 different countries were selected from a pool of over 60 entries for this year’s competition. Instruments will be judged on musicality, design and engineering by an expert panel comprised of experimental performance artist Laurie Anderson, composer, performer and educator, David Wessel, and electronic musician and sound designer Richard Devine.
- Tomorrow (Saturday April 13th) at 5 pm, come back to the Klaus Advanced Computing Building at 266 Ferst Drive on the Georgia Tech campus for Listening Machines, a free annual concert featuring the work of music technology graduate students as they explore how machines can become creative and expressive musicians. This year the concert features the Georgia Tech New Music Ensemble, a group of highly skilled student musicians from across campus who will be performing rock, pop and other new music while interacting with Center for Music Technology’s listening machines. This event, as well as the Guthman competition, are part of the 2013 TechArts Festival (www.arts.gatech.edu).
- Next week (April 17-20) the Office of the Arts at Georgia Tech presents post-classical string quartet ETHEL in residence for three performances on campus. For invigorating artistry and inventive programming, ETHEL is recognized as America’s foremost postclassical string quartet. Using amplification and improvisation in its performances, the ensemble boldly explores new synergies between tradition and technology. Wednesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. – Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons – Free concert featuring “Space” by Phil Kline. Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m. – Architecture Building Atrium – Free concert featuring the original piece “24 Hours” created in conjunction with students from the College of Architecture’s Common First Year studio program. Saturday, April 20 at 8 p.m. – Ferst Center for the Arts – Concert featuring a new work for laptops and string quartet co-created by Jason Freeman and Ethel. Tickets for the Saturday concert are $30 at www.ferstcenter.gatech.edu and 404-894-9600. The other events are free.
- On May 28th Sonic Generator will present an outdoor screening of Fritz Lang’s classic filmMetropolis with a live performance of a score by Martin Matalon for chamber ensemble and electronics. The performance will take place at the Woodruff Arts Center. Watch your inbox for more details in the coming weeks.
