3rd Position Cello Fingering Chart

Third Position Fingering Chart

Third Position (Normal)
In the normal form of the 3rd position, all of the fingers are at half step intervals from each other.  In the chart pictured above, the normal position is indicated by the solid lines around the roman numeral III.  Using the A string as an example:

Finger 1 (index)  —->  plays D
Finger 2 (middle)  —->  plays D# / Eb
Finger 3 (ring)  —->  plays E
Finger 4 (pinkie)  —->  plays F

Third Position (Extended)
With the extended form of 3rd position, the finger placement will consist of a whole step between fingers 1 – 2 and half steps between fingers 2-3, 3-4.  The 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers are extended a half step forward from the normal 3rd position.  The dashed lines in the diagram above show the new note on each string that can be reached by extending these three fingers forward.  Using the G string as an example:

Finger 1  —->  plays C
Finger 2  —->  plays D
Finger 3  —->  plays D# / Eb
Finger 4  —->  plays E
